Museum | Liverpool | England | United Kingdom

Sudley House is a historic building in Liverpool that serves as a museum and art gallery. It houses the only surviving Victorian art collection of a British merchant, still presented in its original setting. The house was built in 1824 and acquired in the 1880s by George Holt, a prominent Liverpool merchant and art collector. Holt expanded the building and redesigned it in the Victorian style to display his extensive art collection. After Holt's death in 1896, the house was inherited by his daughter, Emma Georgina Holt. She bequeathed the property and art collection to the city of Liverpool in 1944, which now manages it as part of National Museums Liverpool.

Sudley House's art collection includes works by significant artists such as Thomas Gainsborough, Joshua Reynolds, Edwin Landseer, John Everett Millais, and J. M. W. Turner. These paintings are displayed in the original context of the house, providing a unique insight into 19th century art collections.

In addition to the art collection, the museum also showcases furniture and decorations from the Victorian era, reflecting the life and times of George Holt and his family. Special features of the house include the original fireplaces and intricately designed interiors that preserve the aesthetics of the Victorian era.
