Holt expanded the building and redesigned it in the Victorian style to display his extensive art collection. After Holt's death in 1896, the house was inherited by his daughter, Emma Georgina Holt. She bequeathed the property and art collection to the city of Liverpool in 1944, which now manages it as part of National Museums Liverpool.
